Workaholism
Hello world, it has been a while since I shared, I just finished working on a project and finally have some time to myself. I was sitting with a couple of my friends a few days back and I have realized that because of the culture and lifestyle we all have nowadays, we all think that workaholism is the norm and having a life means you are slacking off.
looking at our lives and among my friends none of us has a normal life, we all are used to working a minimum of 18 hours a day otherwise we think we are not giving it our all, we are actually jealous of people who has structured working hours (7 am to 2 pm and the likes). We do this without even thinking about our health physically or mentally. And as what I have discovered recently, you don’t really feel the affects until you get a break and suddenly you feel your body and mind giving up as you have stopped racing against the clock to achieve an unhuman number of tasks every day.
This was the case with me almost a month ago, when I left my regular job to start freelancing. I had a small gap between the two jobs which pushed my body to overdrive and it didn’t go back to normal until it got really busy at the new project. Now that I have finished the project my internal system is acting up again, but I understand now that it will take time to overcome the crap I put it through for 12 years, but I’m ready for this journey and I’m looking forward to getting back on track.
I heard a story a while back that in the US Millennials are switching off their work phones when they leave work at 5 pm and that was causing an outrage cuz we live in a world where the norm is for you to work all odd hours and not have any life outside of work. an outrage can you believe it? I mean we work to live not live to work. And the thing is, lets think of this logically, if you broke down physically or mentally, what do you really think will happen? What will your work place do?
I guess what I’m trying to say based on my own experience is, look after yourselves because at the end of the day, you can always find another job but if your systems give up on you, you cant get a new one, That is all I’m saying.
